The slip's showing

NEW YORK: For all their success arranging mergers, securities offerings and loans, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase & Co trail the earnings growth of Goldman Sachs Group and Morgan Stanley. During the most profitable year for the securities industry, Citigroup's investment-banking and trading unit probably earned only 10% more than in 2005, and income at JPMorgan's may have declined as compensation costs rose faster than revenue, analysts estimate. Goldman and Morgan Stanley, the two largest securities firms, reported gains of more than 60% from similar businesses, according to calculations by Sanford C Bernstein & Co analyst Howard Mason. "Citi's growth is meaningfully below its peers and the same is true of JPMorgan," said Mason, whose 'How Good is the Investment Bank?' research report that compares Citigroup with its New York-based competitors has become a must-read on Wall Street....

LONDON (AFX) - Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC is expected to confirm that it has benefited from sustained growth at its investment banking unit when it updates the market on recent trading tomorrow. Analysts believe the UK''s second-biggest bank, which reported a 23 pct jump in interim profit thanks largely to a robust performance in investment banking over the first half, will say the division continued to grow strongly in the third quarter. Investor attention is likely to focus on the group''s motor insurance subsidiaries, Direct Line and Churchill, amid concerns over rising competition and high levels of claims inflation. Analysts at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods are forecasting premium income growth in the "low single digits" for the year as a whole. The market will also be looking for an update on RBoS'' US banking subsidiary Citizens, with the group expected to confirm slower progress in the face of a weakening dollar and slower economic growth....

The Best Investment Strategy

When I say I'm a value investor, people often look at me as if I'm crazy. I'm not. I just know how to stack the odds in my favor. And I'm Foolish enough to believe that everyone should include value stocks as a significant part of their investment portfolio. Value doesn't always lead to quick returns (what investment strategy does?). But over the long term, it blows all other strategies away by a huge margin, and it does so with less volatility, to boot. It's no coincidence that Warren Buffett is both the best-known value investor and the world's second-richest person. Ibbotson Associates did a study comparing the performance of value stocks, growth stocks, and the S&P 500 between 1968 and 2002. Their results are clear. Annual Return $1,000 Becomes ....

China will continue to support foreign banks that become strategic investors in Chinese commercial banks in the next five years, said a document on foreign investment utilization. Chinese banks must hold the majority of shares of such ventures, according to the country's 11th five-year program (2006-2010) on foreign investment utilization. Over the past few years, strategic foreign investors have joined three of the "big four" state-owned commercial banks in China, including the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the Bank of China and the China Construction Bank. Under China's WTO commitment, the country will fully open its banking sector to foreign banks by the end of this year. According to the program, China also encourages strategic foreign investment in state-owned insurance companies which also must be primarily owned by the Chinese partner....

Foreign investment in RP up 20.6%

Foreign direct investment in the Philippines rose 20.6 percent from a year earlier to $1.36 billion in the eight months to August, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said on Friday. Net foreign direct investment (FDI) flows for August alone reached 207 million dollars, the bank said in a statement. "The sustained FDI flows during the eight-month period drew support from the strength of the country's improved macroeconomic fundamentals," the BSP said, citing the improved fiscal position, the falling inflation rate and rising local currency. "The inflows also reflected in part the expansion plans of some companies to increase capacity in anticipation of greater demand following continued favorable domestic and global economic outlook," it added....
